This is a view from the “Mama Mia Road” which clings to the cliffs from Sorrento just outside Naples.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile the Amalfi Coast is a favourite tourist destination, it is also a working community.  The towering mountains and cliffs falling to the Mediterranean limit the land suitable for building and access roads.  Where a river valley offers minimal space to expand in a limited way, many of the residences cling to cliffs and are accessed by footpaths and steep stairs.  I recall seeing a building contractor using a donkey to move materials from the street level to higher up.  With a cliff-side view like this to be enjoyed every day, one must overcome the access difficulties.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe cliff-edge road from Sorrento to Amalfi, via Positano and Praiado, offers spectacular sea views, but it must accommodate large buses and trucks with considerable difficulty.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSo, while the villages absorb the crowds, daily life continues on land and sea.  When the weather is fine and warm, and the sun sets over the western horizon, the sky turns a bright pink and the water a bright blue.  Paradise!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOil painting by Dai Wynn on canvas on board. 35.5 cm high b y 45 cm wide approximately.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Dai Wynn Fine Art","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":48973395034363,"sku":null,"price":590.0,"currency_code":"AUD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0816\/6604\/8251\/files\/AmalfiMediterraneanSunset_0397e861-0247-4bf5-b391-2a5350ab27f0.png?v=1781326893"},{"product_id":"wannon-river-falls-western-victoria","title":"Wannon River Falls,Western Victoria","description":"\u003cp class=\"nitro-offscreen\"\u003eA view of the dramatic waterfall on the Wannon River in the west of Victoria, Australia. This viewing point was made famous by 19th century artists such as Louis Buvelot. The area around the Grampians had a very volcanic history as demonstrated by the coloured layers of rock over which the water flowed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"nitro-offscreen\"\u003eBefore painting this landscape, I travelled to the west of the state from my studio in Melbourne’s east.   Then a rough side road led to the car park overlooking the river and waterfall.  I explored this fascinating area above and beside the river, and took several photographs, three of which became material for oil paintings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"nitro-offscreen\"\u003eIn this artwork, I have used a palette knife and thick oils to emulate the rocky landscape and coloured strata of the ledge over which the water flows.  This adds a three dimensional aspect to the painting’s surface.  Using the palette knife’s sharp point simulated the wave patterns radiating from the splashing water.  The knife is also indispensable when simulating the rough surface of boulders.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"nitro-offscreen\"\u003eIn summary, this painting contrasts the light colours of the dry fields with the dark rocks and water in the deep pool.  It captures a kaleidoscope of colours in the rock strata, and it simulates the rough surfaces of the outcrops, ledges and foreground rocks.  Doubtlessly, a geologist could explain the volcanic history of this region over millions of years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"nitro-offscreen\"\u003eOil painting by Dai Wynn on canvas on board. 40.6 cm high by 30.5 cm wide by 0.5 cm deep.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Dai Wynn Fine Art","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":48973422100731,"sku":null,"price":590.0,"currency_code":"AUD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0816\/6604\/8251\/files\/WannonFallsWesternVictoria.jpg?v=1781330949"},{"product_id":"medieval-houses-in-bergerac-france","title":"Medieval Houses in Bergerac, France","description":"\u003cp class=\"nitro-offscreen\"\u003eA row of medieval brick, timber and stone houses in rue de la Mirpe, Bergerac, Nouvelle Aquitaine, France.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"nitro-offscreen\"\u003eWhile I do not think that these half-timbered dwellings are World Heritage, I just love the colours of the stone, bricks and timber of their façades.  Of course, these are architectural examples in the old town of Bergerac on the banks of the River Dordogne.  A short walk away stands a statue of Cyrano de Bergerac with its prominent nose.  He was a French philosopher, epistolarian, poet and swordsman duelist in the first half of the 17th century.  Then there is \u003cmark class=\"HxTRcb\" data-processed=\"true\"\u003eThe Église Notre-Dame\u003c\/mark\u003e in Bergerac, a prominent neo-Gothic church constructed between 1856 and 1865 based on designs by architect Paul Abadie, often referred to as a cathedral in the region.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"nitro-offscreen\"\u003eInk and watercolour painting by Dai Wynn on 300gsm rough surface Arches cotton paper. 29.5 cm high by 42 cm wide by 0.1 cm deep approximately. One of many imposing castles and forts along the busy waterway, it towers over the left bank about 60 kilometres south west of Frankfurt. The hotel on the grounds of Rheinstein Castle is 2 kilometres from Trechtingshausen train station and 9 kilometres from the hilltop Niederwalddenkmal monument. Kaiser Wilhelm I laid the first stone of this famous monument in 1871 marking the founding of the German Empire in that year.
