This viewing point was made famous by 19th century artists such as Louis Buvelot. One of many imposing castles and forts along the busy waterway, it towers over the left bank about 60 kilometres south west of Frankfurt. The hotel on the grounds of Rheinstein Castle is 2 kilometres from Trechtingshausen train station and 9 kilometres from the hilltop Niederwalddenkmal monument. Kaiser Wilhelm I laid the first stone of this famous monument in 1871 marking the founding of the German Empire in that year.
