Description
The southern Italian port of Amalfi at sunset. This is a view from the “Mama Mia Road” which clings to the cliffs from Sorrento just outside Naples.
While the Amalfi Coast is a favourite tourist destination, it is also a working community. The towering mountains and cliffs falling to the Mediterranean limit the land suitable for building and access roads. Where a river valley offers minimal space to expand in a limited way, many of the residences cling to cliffs and are accessed by footpaths and steep stairs. I recall seeing a building contractor using a donkey to move materials from the street level to higher up. With a cliff-side view like this to be enjoyed every day, one must overcome the access difficulties.
The cliff-edge road from Sorrento to Amalfi, via Positano and Praiado, offers spectacular sea views, but it must accommodate large buses and trucks with considerable difficulty.
So, while the villages absorb the crowds, daily life continues on land and sea. When the weather is fine and warm, and the sun sets over the western horizon, the sky turns a bright pink and the water a bright blue. Paradise!
