Description
The view to the east from the road between Limerick and Tralee on the west coast of Eire, Ireland. The low clouds have parted to allow the autumn sun to light the verdant pastures between hedgerows of coloured foliage. In the centre of this view is a farm complex of modern houses and sheds, and on the horizon sit the Wicklow Mountains.
To me, this scene is so typical of the Emerald Isle. The colour green is so vibrant everywhere one looks. From the aircraft window as we descended into Dublin Airport, the clouds parted and a beautiful green landscape, criss-crossed by darker hedgerows, appeared. For an Australian, this magical scenery is something one would never see in a wide brown and dry continent.
However, one is also reminded that this country, crossed east-west by car in two-and-a-half hours, is the birthplace of our ancestors. Forced out the by British and starved of food during the Great Potato Famine, they made their way around the world, including Australia.
