Description
A watercolour painting by Dai Wynn of a canal in Venezia, the main island of Venice, Italy.
I have made several trips to Venice and each time I try to avoid the inevitable crowds. One does not need to deviate far from the main thoroughfares to enjoy the colourful canals, small bridges, watercraft in all shapes and sizes, and the occasional green space, often behind a brick wall. I love losing myself in narrow walkways (calles) and wonder how service people cope with deliveries. From their barges to the nearest fondamenta mooring, then wheelbarrow to their destination. As for utilities, electricity, internet and water have to be introduced to properties without destroying the heritage aspects. Then there’s the sewerage problem. One one occasion while staying in an island hotel, one became very aware of the odour of sewage. Given that the unstable wooden foundations of Venetian buildings continually move, one can imagine that pipes would crack and leak.
The new MOSE tidal flood barrier is used sparingly to limit aqua alta. It must remain open to allow tides to flush out the lagoon regularly.
Otherwise, Venice is a magical place for visual artists.
