Rhine Castle at Lorch, Germany

A castle and vineyards above the Rhine River at Lorch in Germany's Bavaria region.  This particular establishment, known as Raumasstattung Frederik Mohr, is one of many castles and fortresses along this stretch of the river.  In particular, it sits on relatively flat land, unlike many burgs which cling to rocky outcrops and cliffs overlooking the busy waterway.  

I have visited this region twice by river cruiser and am always intrigued by the dynamism of the riverside.  Some burgs sit in ruins, untouched over the centuries.  Others in better physical state have been converted into hotels and resorts.  I have noticed recent renovation efforts market by scaffolding.  

I have also noticed some amusing castle-naming along the Rhine.  Above the riverside village of Sankt Goarshausen, there are two castles - both in good order.  Burg Katz and Burg Maus.
