Takayama lies in the centre of Japan's Honshu Island in the province of Gifu. It is a rather old village comprising many wooden buildings. Twice a year, in Spring and Autumn, Takayama hosts a festival in which gold and red, hand-created shrines on wheels are pushed along by hundreds of people dressed in traditional gowns and headgear. Some shrines are too large and simply stand in the town square from where traditional chanting over loudspeakers fills the air.
