The Costa d’Amalfi is rightly famous for its small villages clinging to the steep cliffs and nestling into the narrow valleys in between craggy mountains of southern Italy. Positano, Praiano, Amalfi and Ravello are well-known tourist magnets, approached by a narrow serpentine road hewn into the cliff sides above the bejewelled Mediterranean Sea. As a visual artist, I was absolutely stunned by the beauty of towering green mounts scarred by vertical rock faces, sculpted by layers of coloured dwellings with sea views to die for. One wonders how the residents access their balcony viewpoints, let alone cart their shopping home. Perhaps I saw one answer several years ago, when I spotted a tradesman using a donkey saddled with two tool boxes.
